Horseheads, NY – The Hornell Steamers continued their strong start to the season with a dominant 9–0 shutout victory over the Horseheads Hitmen on Sunday afternoon.
The Steamers set the tone early, scoring in the first inning and exploding for four runs in the third. They added insurance with runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, capitalizing on eight hits and eight walks while also benefiting from three Hitmen errors.
Offensively, Hornell was led by Markus Brehm, who reached base four times (2-for-5, double, RBI, stolen base) and scored three runs. Austin Ellis drove in three runs with a hit in five at-bats, while Wyatt Argentieri (2-for-5, 2 RBIs) and Will Dixon (1-for-3, RBI) added to the scoring. Though the team struck out 10 times, they showed patience at the plate, drawing eight walks.
Hornell’s pitching was flawless, combining for a six-hit shutout. Toby Gleeson-Payne got the win with 5.0 innings of two-walk, four-hit ball, striking out two. Relievers Andrew Davis, Jared Ainsworth, Tyler Vogel, and Qingyang Feng each threw a scoreless inning, with the bullpen allowing just two hits and no walks over four frames.
The Hitmen struggled throughout, managing only six singles and failing to score. Starter Kazuto Matsuda lasted just 2.2 innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on six walks and one hit. Control issues plagued Horseheads all day, with their pitchers combining for five hit batters and eight total walks.
