HORNELL, N.Y. – The Horseheads Hitmen erupted for 21 runs on 13 hits Thursday night, powering past the Hornell Steamers 21-11 in the season opener at Maple City Park.
Horseheads wasted little time making an impact, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning before Hornell answered with four runs of its own in the bottom half. After the Steamers trimmed the deficit to 6-5 in the third, the Hitmen offense took control, scoring four runs in the fifth, four more in the sixth, four in the seventh, and three in the eighth to pull away for the win.
The offensive star of the night was Keon Lamarche, who went 3-for-4 with a double, seven RBIs, two runs scored, and two walks. Lamarche's seven RBIs accounted for one-third of Horseheads' run production and fueled the late offensive surge.
Mason Sanno delivered a strong performance from the leadoff spot, finishing 2-for-6 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Julian Lamper-Turkisher collected three hits and drove in two runs. Michael Sabella contributed three RBIs, and Yahir Ortiz crossed the plate a team-high five times while adding two RBIs.
The Hitmen displayed outstanding plate discipline throughout the evening, drawing 13 walks and forcing Hornell pitchers to throw 221 pitches. Horseheads finished with 21 RBIs and sent 57 batters to the plate.
On the mound, Luke Richards earned the win in relief, tossing five innings and allowing five hits and six runs, none of which were earned. Richards struck out four and helped stabilize the game after Hornell threatened to rally.
Liam Annand started the contest, working two innings, while Connor Monroe added an inning of relief before Richards took over. The trio combined for seven strikeouts.
Hornell was led offensively by Will Parker, who recorded three hits, while Taylor Joseph and Nolan Winthrop each drove in two runs.
The victory gives Horseheads a 1-0 start to the 2026 season and sets the stage for Friday's home opener against the Steamers.
